Civilization cannot exist without communication. People communicate in some form or another to connect; to strengthen society. In our current century, we live in a heavily connected world. The internet is the entity to thank. We use the internet, and its many blogs, forums, and social networks to convey messages to people around the world that we haven't even met in person.
Now, think for a moment the many artificial languages that comprise the internet. Various programming languages or codes such as HTML and JavaScript make the internet possible. Now think about the complex codes that comprise an artificial intelligence.
What if you could communicate with an A.I.? Well, you can, thanks to Cleverbot.com. Cleverbot is a quirky chat A.I. that can learn from user inputs. Cleverbot can be considered the accumulative consciousness of the many users that it has conversed with. It is the internet itself. I decided to collaborate with Cleverbot to create music, the "Universal Language."
The Process
I composed music with the internet itself. It is the ultimate communication colaboration! I had a series of conversations with Cleverbot. I composed melodies or patterns based on the first letters of each of our sentences. Letters A-G stood for their respective notes. The remaining letters in the alphabet were replaced as follows:
H=A
I=B
J=C
K=D
L=E
M=F
N=G
O=A
P=B
Q=C
R=D
S=E
T=F
U=G
V=A
W=B
X=C
Y=D
Z=E
NOTE: Not all of the first sentence letters were used. Artistic liberties were taken to make the tunes sound "correct."
I used a combination of the programs FamiTracker, ModPLUG tracker, and Audacity to create the tunes. FamiTracker creates authentic-sounding chiptune music from the NES area of video games. ModPLUG tracker is a higher quality music tracking program. I felt that incorporating something as electronic as chiptune would add to the artificial feel of the Cleverbot conversation. After all, Cleverbot is an artificial intelligence.
The Results
Below are the tunes. They are accompanied by the original conversations with Cleverbot that sparked the songs.
NOTE: I am still working on this project. I plan to have a few more songs uploaded within the next several days.
